Oil from Spanish Sage (Salvia lavendulaefolia) has been shown to have beneficial effects on memory recall amongst other properties.

These are the sage oil capsules used in the memory study at Northumbria University and are not to be confused with common sage - Salvia officinalis

The study conducted at Northumbria University using the capsules supplied by Power Health, concluded that capsules containing essential oil from Salvia lavandulaefolia (Spanish Sage) significantly improved participants memory for hours. 

Traditionally Sage has always had an excellent reputation for its power to aid the mind (notwithstanding its role as a stuffing ingredient) and now that reputation can be backed up by hard, scientific data.

44 healthy young adults aged between 18 and 37 were tested in the study conducted at Northumbria University using Spanish Sage Oil capsules supplied by Power Health. 

Word recall testing over several hours showed that those who had taken the sage oil consistently performed better than those who had taken placebos.

Spanish Sage appears to inhibit an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase (AChE) which breaks down the chemical messenger acetylcholine. Interestingly, a drop in acetylcholine levels is found in sufferers of Alzheimers, though further research is apparently underway to determine any benefits of Spanish Sage to sufferers of this disease.
