Hayfever & Allergies

For millions of people the simple act of opening a window, vacuuming a carpet or stroking a cat provokes sniffles. The cause of the symptoms is not pollen, dust or cat hair, however, but an overactive immune system.

Allergic Rhinitis is the medical term for the nasal symptoms caused by allergies to airborne particles. The condition can be an occasional inconvenience or a severe problem that interferes with every aspect of daily life.

If you notice symptoms during warm weather you may have the seasonal allergies commonly known as hay fever, triggered by tree or grass pollen during late spring and early summer. If you have the symptoms all year round, the most likely culprits are animal fur, household dust mites or mould. These irritants all produce the same symptoms.

How Supplements can help

For seasonal allergies the recommended supplements should be taken from early spring onwards. The flavonoid Quercetin is an alternative to over the counter drugs. Quercetin inhibits the release of histamine, without any side effects, and when combined with nettle leaf, can combat sneezing, itching and swollen nasal passages.

Vitamin C is the main antioxidant in the cells of the respiratory passages. It supports the immune system, and may also have anti-inflammatory and antihistamine effects.

The B vitamin Pantothenic acid should reduce nasal congestion. These nutrients can be taken throughout the allergy season, alongside traditional drugs

When taken long term Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oils of flaxseed oil, may help reduce inflammatory symptoms

Did you know?

Garden flowers rarely cause allergies because their pollen is too heavy to be carried by the air alone, it has to be transported by bees and other insects

Certain herbs are natural antihistamines. Try sipping teas made from anise, ginger or peppermint. Drink up to four cups a day as needed to reduce symptoms.

If you have a medical condition, consult your doctor before taking any supplements
