Each capsules provides 100mcg of Vitamin K2
(MK-7), which plays an important role in cardiovascular and bone health.
Whilst K1 has primarily been researched for its rolein bone health,
K2
(MK-7) has been shown to play an important role in both cardiovascular and bone health. This diversity of applications combined with its superior bioavailability makes it the ideal choice for those looking to supplement their diet with Vitamin K
Vitamin K actually refers to a group of vitamins with similar structures. These are vitamins K1 (known as phylloquinone or phytonadione) and vitamin K2 (known as menaquinone, or MK). Vitamin K1 is synthesised by plants, vegetables and algae and has a low bioavailability. Vitamin K2 is synthesised
by gut bacteria and has a high bioavailability. Vitamin K2 can be found in fermented foods, particularly cheese and natto (Japanese fermented soybeans). Vitamin K2 is subdivide into short chain menaquinones (i.e. MK-7 to MK-9).
Vitamin K plays an important role in the synethesis of a group of proteins called Gla-proteins. Gla stands for
gamma-carboxy glutamate
and these proteins are important in the utilisation of calcium.
Vitamin K is therefore important in relation to blood clotting and bone health, and more recently has been identified as playing a crucial role in arterial health. Here, the deposition of calcium in the blood vessel walls is prevented by the action of matrix Gla protein, which is activated by vitamin K2
