Directions

Background Information

 

Diarrhoea can be defined as an increase in the frequency and amount of loose stools. It can be caused by a virus or bacteria – usually due to the ingestion of contaminated drinking water, undercooked meat and eggs or poor standards of hygiene.

 

If these situations occur, the body’s reaction is twofold - Introduce large amounts of water into the large intestines, and make the intestines more active by contracting frequently and irregularly, in order to flush out irritable micro-organisms, which results in diarrhoea.
