D-Ribose is a fundamental building block of ATP (adenosine triposphate), also known as the energy molecule, so without sufficient ribose in the cell, ATP cannot be formed. If ATP cannot be formed, the energy pool cannot be re-supplied if the cell becomes energy starved.
