What is Lestrin?
Lestrin
is a food supplement containing two important, naturally occurring plant substances; Beta-sitosterol and Beta-sitostanol.
These plant sterols/stanols are present in Lestrin in the same ratios as are found in nature. Increasing evidence suggests that including plant sterols/stanols in a healthy diet may help maintain normal cholesterol levels.
What is Cholesterol?
Cholesterol is a fat-like substance that is actually an essential nutrient, necessary for repairing cell membranes, producing hormones and manufacturing vitamin D. Two thirds of the cholesterol we need is manufactured by the liver when stimulated by eating saturated fat and the rest is supplied by the diet. Cholesterol is transported around the body by lipoproteins
Low Density Liproproteins (LDL) transport about 75% of the blood’s cholesterol to the body’s cells and also carry cholesterol through the artery wall (‘bad’ cholesterol).
High Density Liproproteins (HDL) remove cholesterol from the walls of the artery and deliver it back to the liver (‘good’ cholesterol).
How to maintain a healthy heart.
Cholesterol levels can be influenced by a number of factors including smoking, diet, age and exercise. You can help maintain a healthy heart by not smoking, reducing your intake of fats (especially saturated fats) and exercising regularly (if you have not exercised for some time or have been ill recently, check with your doctor before undertaking any strenuous activity.
What are Plant Sterols and Stanols?
Plant sterols and stanols (also known as Phytosterols/stanols), are natural components found in virtually all plants. In the western hemisphere we eat far less plant sterols per day than in other parts of the world. They are an important part of our diet yet they are easily destroyed when food is processed. There are 40 different types of plant sterols but the most common form is Beta-sitosterol. They have a similar structure to cholesterol and are processed by the body in the same way.
Why is Lestrin different from foods containing Plant Sterols/Stanols?
There are a number of foods available that contain plant sterols/stanols such as margarines, yoghurts and cream cheese spreads. It is recommended that 2-3 portions should be consumed daily. It can sometimes be difficult to incorporate these foods into the daily diet. To consume 2-3 portions of margarine per day it would mean eating 4-6 slices of bread per day.
Lestrin
provides the plant sterols/stanols in a convenient tablet form that can be taken whenever you want with meals. It also avoids eating extra dairy products that contribute to your daily fat intake.
